Welcome to Go Inside News

I have noticed that very often the way people achieve worthwhile things is not by “turning the volume up”, moving into the unknown, or being more of anything: but by going inside what already exists and exploring the nuance and anomaly they find there. This idea is where the name Go Inside News comes from, and it’s an important part of the philosophy that has guided my explorations of the media industry. In a practical sense, Go Inside News is at the moment a collection of my publications on the media industry, beginning in 2011, and including much of the work of the Share Wars project, with the permission of my colleagues and friends Dom Filipovic and Andy Hunter. Share Wars ran from 2012-2015 and was in many ways before its time, amassing data on news sharing behaviour and documenting the ways the Facebook was changing the news industry. In our 2015 book All Your Friends Like This the chapter on what we called “hoax news” was particularly prescient, although we did not hit on the phrase “fake news” by which the phenomenon we observed came to be known. It is possible that over time Go Inside News will become more than an archive of interesting thoughts on news media, and will acquire the heartbeat of a living publication. In that case it will have more contributors and deal with industry news and observations. For the moment, I would rather underpromise and overdeliver with the occasional piece of industry analysis. I know how much work a truly living site demands. My experience is as a news editor and director in digital and broadcast newsrooms. I have worked in The Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand.
